In a time of financial turmoil, you can trust the Knights of Columbus.

Perhaps the worst thing about the difficult economic times we’re going through is not being sure who we can trust, and whether the financial “experts” really understood the risks they were taking.

We Can Help - Thomas P. Smith Jr.

In the January column, I wrote about the alarming statistic which tells us that about 50% of the households in the U.S. and Canada have no individually owned life insurance. If you recall, we talked about group life insurance and the tendency to get very comfortable that you are “covered” if you have this benefit at work.

Momentous Milestones - Thomas P. Smith Jr.

This past year was a momentous one for the Knights of Columbus Insurance program. Let me just highlight a few of the many milestones.

Long Term Care - THOMAS P. SMITH JR.

There are very few people who have not heard or read about long-term care insurance. Just as there are very few people who do not have a “long-term care experience” somewhere in their family — a loved one in a nursing home facility, or a family member being cared for at home because of advancing age or a disability (or both). So, there is no need to spend very many words in this column on the catastrophic effect these events can have on a family, crossing all generations. You already know that.

Walter's Story - Thomas P. Smith

During 2008, one of our general agents from New York, Rich Malek, lost his father, Walter. Many of us at the Supreme Council headquarters in New Haven, Conn., knew Walter from a visit he made to one of our manager meetings in Florida. “Pop,” as Walter was affectionately known by his son, was a great guy, and Rich misses him deeply.  It was a storybook father-son relationship. While Walter was alive, Rich and he spoke every day — and from spring through fall, the main topic was the New York Mets.

RELAX AND REST EASY - Thomas P. Smith

Sometimes I sit at my desk and just wonder about things. Today, I was wondering why our annuity business is doing so well – up about 70% over last year.

Not that I am unhappy or troubled by business being good. I am in sales, and when business is good, the sun seems to shine a little brighter, food tastes better, and I find myself singing along with the radio. It’s nice.
